Once upon a time,
there was a four year old girl who raided her mother's scarf drawer, tucked
the contents into her sailor bikini, and danced for her family. She was
later given a pair of pink "genie" pants for dress-up, which
she wore until they only came to her knees. That little girl grew up to
be Faizeh.
As an adult, Faizeh discovered she could combine her lifelong passion
for Middle Eastern culture with her lifelong studies in performance. She
began her studies with Krisha Kazmira, whose influence can be seen throughout
some of Southern California's favorite belly dancers. Faizeh continues
her regular studies under the world-famous Zahra Zuhair, as well as Dr.
Robyn Friend.
During the course of her career, Faizeh has performed on both coasts,
as well as many places in between. She was a founding member of the troupe
Nisaa Benezir, and she also directed the student troupe Rashidah Sabaa
for several years, until her adult teaching retirement. Today, you're
most likely to see her soloing at restaurants, nightclubs, and special
events in Hollywood or locally in the Antelope Valley. She also directs
the American Tribal Style troupe Hiplash. She continues to dance with
Alamkara, a professional troupe that rose up from Society of Creative
Anachronism. Faizeh directs two children's troupes as well- Ants in Your
Pants Belly Dance and the Raqs-a-Belly Sweethearts, both of whom are favorites
at showcases.
In all her spare time, Faizeh, along with business partner Kris Hellstrom,
produces Southern California's Original Alternative Style Belly Dance
Competition- Hips of Fury. Faizeh is very proud of the fact that many
belly dance careers were jump-started as a result of Hips of Fury.
One would not be able to pin down Faizeh's eclectic style. She enjoys
American Cabaret, as well as Tribal, Gothic, and Egyptian. She is best
known for her enthusiasm for the art form, and her ability to seemlessly
blend various styles to create something respectful to tradition, yet
innovative and exciting.
